General Description Irises can provide two unique profiles in the garden: a grass like texture with the tall sword like stems that last all summer and colorful flowers during bloom season. Most varieties are easy to grow and generally not susceptible to insect or disease problems. We offer mostly Siberian Irises and a few bearded varieties because they have done well in our soil conditions with little to no care. Siberian Irises are clump forming and need to be divided when the clumps become too dense. This is usually after 4 or 5 years of growth. The Lilies we offer are primarily Asiatic and Tiger Lilies. These are both easy to grow and require little to no care. It is recommended to give them a little lime once a year to prevent the soil from becoming acidic. Lilies generally don't have any insect or disease problems except in a very wet year. In this situation, a periodic application of a general fungicide would be a good preventative measure. Lilies grow from bulbs and should be planted about six inches deep in the soil. Over several years, the bulbs will work their way toward the surface. Consequently it is a good practice, every three years, to dig up the bulbs in either late fall (after they have gone dormant) or early spring and replant them. By this time they will have grown a significant number of new bulbs that can be spread to increase your bed size or create new beds. Some Irises will rebloom if growing conditions are good, but in most cases Irises and Lilies have a single bloom season. However, when they are blooming, both are sensational with bright vivid colors that really stand out in the garden.
